Now that Playing with Image Transfers has been out and about for a week, I've had a moment to think about what an incredible journey its been! I am continuously inspired by the students and friends who show me how great beauty can be achieved with the simple techniques and methods of transfers. Thank you all!

Image Transfers on Everything

A fun little collection of image transfer projects from the book, and from classes. Its amazing how versatile image transfers are. I find that I use them on paper in quick correspondence, in gift wrap, on fabric, on wood, on metal on anything almost!  They can be immediate are spontaneous or the base of a mixed media piece as just one of many layers. They more I play, the more I love them.

Lisa Kokin

In keeping with recent posts, here is another artist whose work I love...

Best of all, book artist Lisa Kokin is a local artist who offers workshops in book arts and whose work is in the new show Unbound at the Bedford Gallery. I will probably visit the show sometime this week. My good friend and painter, Dickson Schneider is also in the show along with Julie Chen of Flying Fish Press, Emily Payne (another local) and believe it or not, Andy Warhol among others! Show is on until August 29th.

Marcelo in the Real World

Okay, so I love to read. I especially love to read children's books. From picture books to young adult, anything that has magic and mystery and wonder is for me. I find kids books to feature characters who embody these themes more frequently than adult books do, so on any visit to the library I am most often in the children's section than not. True to reading habit, I just finished a YA book called Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco Stork. My friend Sarah, who heads up the children's section at Books Inc. on 4th St. in Berkeley, recommended this to me after we chatted about the best (and worst) kids books available right now.

Sarah was spot on. This story is so thoughtfully written and beautifully crafted I enjoyed every word. The protagonist. Marcelo, is a 17 year old boy who has something akin to Asperger's Syndrome and is forced to enter "The Real World" the summer before his senior year of High School. His actions over the summer will determine whether or not he is allowed to return to the school he has attended since first grade or be enrolled in the local public school instead.

Without being overly sentimental or preachy, the author creates a look inside the mind of a boy somewhere on the outside as he navigates his way into "The Real World." Next up.. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. Happy Reading!

Found

Went to a library book sale today and bought this little books with anatomy engravings. Inside were these medium format photos...an even better find....

This one had "Our New Home" penned on the back.

I am in love with I Love Macarons! I bought this today at Anthro. The instructions seem straightforward and are accompanied by wonderful images. Best of all its in English! Will post pics as I make the recipes!

A Perfect Saturday

So a "perfect" day for me would include tea, something delicious to eat and a walk in a pretty setting. If you add a great find of unique store or some treasure, then the day is complete. Based on those guidelines, I guess I had the perfect Saturday...

First, Earl Grey at Cafe Triste in Berkeley...

Second, a trip to the Farmers' Market for French melons, nasturtium salad greens and some other goodies...





Third, a trip to UC Berkeley's Botanical Gardens...

Last, lunch at Sol Food in San Rafael. Delicious plantains, homemade sparkling limeade, black beans and rice and greens tossed in the tartest, spiciest hot sauce I've ever eaten!

Then a peek in Donna Seager Gallery at the book show on now... I love these book pods...

Books in Progress

I started a few accordion format books... here they are so far....

I used a transparent transfer method for the face of the female figure, then drew beneath the image to create these two visages.

The text is from Italian American poet, WS di Piero from his book of poems, Chinese Apples.

This second accordion is small, black and has a tunnel of irregular windows that allow the viewer a glimpse of a slightly open mouth.

After many pages, the mouth becomes more visible

The last page reveals a portion of Odd Nerdrum's painting Isola.
