A certain boy took me to Texas for an early birthday present for... A trip to Roundtop (one of the largest antique faires in the US)!!! It was amazing and hot and we had fun searching out treasures. Visiting Roundtop is an experience thats hard to describe... Roundtop is actually just one site among many in this two week long antique extravaganza. There were thousands of vendors with booths that ranged from tables set up on the side of a road, to spaces that looked like storefronts inside huge circus like tents. One of my favorite sites was Marburger. Large white tents labeled from A-F housed dozens of booths all decorated and installed like stores (think the Parisian Porte de Clignancourt of Texas). Amidst the tents sat little cabin like structures that also housed specialty antiques, from fine jewelry to paintings to taxidermy! On the other spectrum, many vendors are farmers or artists who set up shop along the couple miles of winding highway. It was so fun to hunt for rusty junk under tables after walking through fine sculptures and gorgeously displayed items in the tents. Here are just a few of my favorite finds from our treasure hunting!

Strictly Vintage Now Open on Etsy
Check out our new Etsy Shop Strictly Vintage. Matt and I launched the shop this morning with our featured item... a Trapper Nelson Indian Pack Board. This old school hiking pack is named after the legendary Trapper Nelson of the 1930s who lived off the land selling furs, walking the woods and became known as the Wildman of Laxahatchee after he opened his own wildlife zoo. He's something of an outdoorsman's hero... This is just one of the many vintage items you can add to your collection. Check them all out on Etsy! Cheers!

Aria
Had the chance to pop into one of my favorite shops in SF, Aria. Among all the treasures I found and purchased some tiny vials of mounted micro shells from the 18th century. The owner, Bill travels to France several times a year to search out antique pieces and collections...Sunday, August 29, 2010
A Day of Finds
Had a full day! Woke up at 6:30 and headed to Niles for their annual Antique Sale. I came away with a few goodies and after a few hours of garage sale scouring and booth bargaining, I continued onto Oakland for..... a walk in the Mountain View Cemetery with Miss Essential Monsters herself.
We stumbled on this outsider art shadow box on an unmarked grave in the "unfunded" portion of the cemetery. It was such an amazing find amongst the broken head stones and weeds of a forgotten group of graves from an Oakland's home for women.
After a few hours of graveside strolling I went to SF to see the Birth of Impressionism show at the De Young. You can't, of course, take any pics in the gallery (although I'm pretty sure I did at the Musée D'Orsay when I saw them the first time), but I did take some shots of some of my favs from the permanent collection...

A Day in the City
Spent the day in SF with my friend Alicia. We started at her house with a breakfast of crepes sprinkled with sugar and a squeeze of meyer lemon juice made by her husband.... they were amazing!!!!After a walk down Valencia, and a delicious lunch at Papalote's we stumbled upon this wonderful shop appropriately named Gypsy Honeymoon. I found a few beautiful pieces there including a vintage still life oil for a bargain! The proprietor, Gabrielle Ekedal, is the fourth owner and treasurer hunter Gypsy Honeymoon has had in its 17 years open. Gabrielle is warm and welcoming and has created a beautiful store full of delicate vignettes and rare findings. Its a truly unique collection, reasonably priced and thoughtfully, artfully crafted. I can't wait for a return visit!!!
