Apricot Jam & Buttermilk Biscuits

I spent my 4th of July making my first batch of Apricot Jam of the season. Last year I was lucky enough to pick my own apricots, but this year I purchased them from a produce stand in Sonoma. I tried leaving the skins on as removing them takes over an hour, and I have to say I like the jam better with the skins. The jam turned out beautifully!  It's rich orange glow looks amazing on the pantry shelf and it has the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. I finally had a chance today to make buttermilk biscuits. I have to say its one of my favorite pairings of food... homemade biscuits and jam. All I need now is a jar of ice tea and my Sunday is set!

Change...

These past few weeks have been all about change. Summer weather has just started to hit, schools out and for some its vacation time. For me, change comes in the form of a new and exciting job!  Only a week in, I am still wrestling with a new schedule and environment, but am so excited to settle into this new phase of life. Its too hot to say more, but with this new job comes more afternoon time so I hope to hope post more regularly. For now, I am off to eat a light summer salad (as seen above). Hope this summer has exciting new adventures in store for you all!

Day Two in Seattle

I am always on the search for les macarons. Our first stop was le panier in Pike Place market. The macarons had good texture and were pretty tasty, but our favorite macarons came later in the day...
These jewel toned macarons we discovered at Honore Artisan Bakery in Ballard. Although these macarons were larger than their Parisian counterparts, they were delicious! Our favorites were the salted caramel with coconut and the lavender with lavender ganache. Their other pastries and confections were equally delicious!

Our most memorable find of the day was Bella Umbrella just next to Honore Bakery in Ballard.
This tiny shop displayed dozens of vintage umbrellas from the ceiling and housed a myriad of unusual and unique styles along their shelves. All the umbrellas were arranged by color which made for the most breathtaking presentation!

Aaron found this 50's double layered umbrella that was black on the outside with a floral scalloped lining.
The owner rents most of these vintage umbrellas out for weddings and other events, but she also makes a signature pagoda umbrella which I had to have. I chose a pink pagaoda canopy with a red wooden handle. I'm so taken with the shape and style of this umbrella! It has me dreaming of flying away like Mary Poppins!
I also loved this pink and black plaid umbrellas from the 50s...
My pink pagaoda umbrella!

A Day in the City

Had a day off with Aaron and we decided to spend the whole day walking around in San Francisco. Any trip to Sf requires a stop by Miette, our favorite sweet shop for some chocolate and les macarons.

We also tried out the new Crown & Crumpet teashop in Ghiradeli square. It was fabulous! Just the right mixture of old time British charm with pink polka dot sass. They have over 35 different teas to choose from and a delightful lunch and cocktail menu too!

New Wallet

I made the duct tape wallet on the left 3 years ago just before I left on a trip for Ireland. It once looked shiny and new like the one I just made (on the right) yesterday. I think it was definitely time for a new one!

I used paper as the base for the construction and pieced it together bit by bit.

I have about a dozen library cards and an address book and a million bits of paper and such that for some reason I feel I must have in my wallet, so I need something pretty large. This wallet has a three tiered section for all my cards (below) and a large pouch opposite for my address book, receipts and cash.

I love the way it turned out! The great thing about duct tape is it lasts forever and is easy to repair!  Eat your heart out Kate Spade!!!

Glitter & Grunge Show

Mark your calendars for the Glitter & Grunge Show in Sacramento in May. MJ and I will be sharing a booth, so come say hello and buy handmade!

Quilts in Progress

I am currently working on two twin quilts for the girls using Heather Ross's Mendocino mermaid line. I am also making a quilt for myself inspired by a ribbon quilt which used all silk hair ribbons for its fabric.  I made a trip to the Ribbonerie on Sacramento in the City (you must visit this shop if you haven't already discovered what a wonderful place it is!) to pick up some ribbons, but decided in the end to use these fantastic taffeta scraps I had instead.

This is the quilt so far. It took so many hours just to get to this point. Who knows when I'll finish!

My New Website - Paper Musings

I am so happy to announce my website Paper Musings is up and running, although still in progress. You can find it at www.ccerruti.com (or courtneycerruti.com)  which used to point to this blog. Fear not, you can access my blog directly from my website. On the site you'll find a portfolio of work as well as the workshops I teach.  Oh, and any feedback is welcome! Enjoy! Thanks!

Coraline

Saw Coraline last night and was so pleasantly surprised...it was better than I had expected. I loved the story and the animation was hauntingly beautiful. Every detail in the movie was perfectly executed; I was so impressed.  I don't know how it compares to the book, but I already want to see it again!

Arts Benicia Show Opening

Went to the opening of The Art of a Community exhibit at Arts Benicia tonight. I was so happy to have found this arts organization in my somewhat nearby neighborhood. Although I live in Vallejo, I find myself on First St. in Benicia far more often that any downtown Vallejo street.
I spent an hour or so looking at the work of 180 different artists. I was pleasantly surprised by the vast range of mediums. Being especially into book arts right now, and as always, anything precious and delicate, I was drawn to this altered book by Karen Hatzigeorgiou.  While butterflies are not my favorite motif, the all white frames of these paper insects cast shadows on the book. They leap off the page only to be suspended, unmoving, yet flickering in the light. I like how the forms create other shapes, constantly changing and shifting in its environment. To be honest, there were so many people, I didn't get a very close or intimate look at any one piece, but I was happy to have spent my night there.  The show will be up through most of March, and I will like to see it again, without the buzzing crowd.

Cake Box Book

Made this Cake Box Book as seen in Esther K. Smith's How to Make Books.  I love the look of using this vintage looking yellow cake mix...so 1950's! I of course considered making a book of the funfetti style cake for MJ since that's her favorite cake mix, but I didn't like the box.

I used kraft paper, a cake mix yellow paper, and old school ruled newsprint paper (the kind I hated using when I was a kid). I bound the book with red and white baker's twine.

I love how the stitches look on the spine.

Voila! A Cake box book!

New Workshops

I am happy to announce I will be teaching workshops out of my studio at the Napa House. Check out the Napa House Blog for a class schedule!!! Coming up on Sunday February 22nd, I am offering a class in image transfer techniques for collage and paper arts. I will also be creating a Spring Schedule of new classes at the^workshop in Berkeley shortly. I have a renewed sense of purpose after the past few weeks of not wanting to even be at my house, let alone making anything. I hope to kick of the new year in February since January wasn't a proper send off into 2009. Hope this surge will last!!!!

Sticky Sushi Rice

Thanks everyone for all the support!  It helps tremendously!  I will be posting more regularly now. The last 10 days or so I have been hiding out at my boyfriend's restaurant and so I haven't been home much. Good stuff to come..

Went to Ichiban Kan (my favorite japanese dollar store) and bought these plastic molds for making rice balls and sushi. I made the girls avocado sushi for diner and they had cucumber rice flowers and hearts for lunch the next day. I had so much fun making them. I even have a little bird shape to try also.

My Night

I came home from a pleasant day spent teaching a workshop and an evening with MJ. As I pulled up to my hillside Victorian in Vallejo I noticed a bike leaning on the bushes in front of my house. A casual thing, but a bit out of place. I walked up my unlit front stairs (I usually keep the porch light on, but my bay area "greener" self said no, save the energy, the planet etc) to the front door. I noticed my boyfriend's boots were knocked over...strange. I opened the front door and as always turned my head right to see if my computer was still in its spot, and yes, it was there, untouched, so surely everything was as it should be. I walked straight from my door, turning lights on along the way and setting my purse and camera on the couch as I passed through the living room. I headed to the kitchen at the back of the house, flipped on the light and looked at the kitchen floor I swept just that morning. There are strange things on the floor, long, narrow and jagged and the curtain is askew. A double tiered basket of fruit is teetering on the butcher block. These things are not as I left them...click, click, click... and then it registers, the window has been broken, and there is someone in the house...

I backed out of my house pausing at the door and going back to the living room for my purse which has my cell phone and car keys. I called 911 from my cell, only to be put on hold. I stood shaking in the middle of the street looking up at the place I call home wondering if someone else, someone who has no face, is inside. I knocked on a neighbor's door, no one was home. By the time I had explained the situation to the CHP operator, a car of teenage boys had pulled up to the house I was standing in front of and within seconds a cop who is just passing by is flagged down. Minutes later the back up arrives. I am still on the phone, now being transfered to the actual Vallejo police.

10 or so youngish uniformed men stand amid a grouping of haphazzardly parked black cruisers in front of my house, making plans, organizing themselves. I say many times in response to their questions, no, there is no dog, no, no weapons etc. They ascend my steps, several go inside, another around the side yard, another up the alley down the block. Then there is yelling and commotion, repeated orders to "Put your hands up." They catch the man inside my house. He was crouching in the yard, having just run out the back door. He was in my house when I came up the stairs, opened my door and stepped inside. He was in my house as I went through my normal actions, removing coat and purse, flipping on lights. He was in my house. He was in my house. He was is my house and so was I... at the same time.

They arrest him, and empty his pockets onto the hood of their cruiser. For his effort, he has managed to get a ribbon full on silver rings from my high school days, a couple of batteries and a cheap porcelain figurine of a rabbit. Later I found out that he has also taken a shower in my bathtub. He cut his hand upon entry, smeared and dripped blood about my house, which I have spent the night removing with bleach. In picking up my freshly folded laundry (some of which has blood on it), now scattered about my bedroom. I find a bag that had been holding papers that morning, now filled with my underwear. Another sack of my underwear sits next to the the paper "to go" bag. I move to the girls' room which has also been rifled and find a pair of women's underwear and PJ bottoms sitting there. It is not mine, it is not familiar. He was in my house. He was in my house. He was in my house, and so was I.

Thanks everyone for all the supportive thoughts and comments! The day after I am still left with a broken window and a feeling of vulnerability and violation. I've lost a bit of faith in humanity not only by the break in, but by my landlord's response which was a superficial "glad no one was hurt" followed with an accusatory tone of why didn't you have a timer on or the porch light on etc. They refused to pay for the broken window or the installation of an alarm.
Having said that, I am so very grateful that I wasn't hurt, that I didn't have the girls with me, and that the guy was caught by the police. Maybe there is a stroke of good luck coming my way soon!

A Collection

I am a collector. It's in my nature.  I appreciate old and worn things, throw away things, miniature things, things that tell a story, things that I can tell a story with or through, and all these things end up a part of my space. I love to scour the thrift stores, antique shows and flea markets for unusual objects. But I am lucky enough to also have friends who sometimes collect on behalf. This little numbered bottle set was given to me by Ellen, a friend and co-owner of the^workshop in Berkeley. She said now she has a "Courtney" spot in her home of things she might find in her travels that no one would appreciate but me. I am so lucky to have such friends!

I'm not sure what I will do with these once I've put them in order. Undoubtedly fill the tiny vials with something...

We'll just have to wait and see!
